Large items, such as furniture and appliances, can be picked up by
appointment. Call Des Moines Public Works’ 24-hour, customer service line at

Parts and whole computer monitors and televisions can be recycled through Metro Waste Authority’s Regional Collection Center for Household Hazardous Waste.

Registration and licenses
Vehicle registration
New residents must obtain Iowa license plates within 30 days of arrival.
Titles and plates may be obtained from the county treasurer, Motor Vehicle
Division. In Polk County, call

Driver’s licenses
Iowa driver's licenses can be obtained at the Office of Driver Services in
Ankeny, 6310 SE Convenience Blvd.
